The focus of most eyes in the crowd of several hundred was on the grizzly family. I watched Tom Mangelsen. As bear 610 and three cubs ambled northward across Willow Flats, stalking elk calves right in front of the grassy promenade adjoining the patio at Jackson Lake Lodge, Mangelsen was engaging two young lads. “Are these the first grizzlies you have ever seen?” he asked. The rapt boys nodded, unable to control their glee. He knew they would never forget this experience for as long as they live; some day, they’ll be telling their own children about it. “Think about it,” Tom said to me. “This is what a summer vacation in a national park is supposed to do.”… PDF download (1.2MB)
